Week 36 “Sydney” – Selections

Long weekend this week in Perth means some time for me to catch up on this blog 🙂

.I went back to visit my family in Sydney around two weeks ago so the photos for week 36 & the following week 37 will be from the east coast.

Alot has changed since the last time I visited Sydney two years ago. Lots of development, civil works and a crazy amount of humanity compared to Perth.

I couldn’t help but keep snapping photos from the car on the way home due to the unfamiliarity of the city I use to live in .

The first stop we went to was the Fish market in Pyrmont. Found an awesome butcher called “Vic’s meat market” Amazing quality meat and produce. I tend to experiment on health and nutrition and I am currently doing a zero carb diet, that is, no vegetables or fruit, just meat and the occasional dairy. I even cut out coffee and teas. So going there was like Disneyland to me!  I was mortified seeing the butcher cut so much fat off the beef whilst there because of all the negativity and misinformation on saturated fat and cholesterol.

Anyways enough about nutrition, like i said earlier, what I noticed were the amount of construction happening in Sydney. Roads, buildings, bridges, scaffolding, the city seemed to be in a constant state of growth.

22/52 – “Crash”

The theme generated by the handy random word generator for this week 22 is “Crash”

I don’t necessarily want to hunt for car crashes but that was the first thing that popped in my head.

Culture crash/clash perhaps? A juxtaposition but with one element more out of place than the other. So far I have shot one which I think fits in the theme.

Pigeon crash?

A damaged car could count i guess. Lots of ideas flowing, now just need some shooting.

Note: Feature photo above was taken in the Philippines in 2013 after one of the big typhoons hit the country. I doubt I’ll get something like that here in Perth.

Week 10/52 “Open Theme” – Selection

Selection for week 10/52 Open theme. I cant think of anything more uncomfortable than lying down on a bunch or sharp rocks. The legs on the top right hand side was a bonus 🙂

Week 08/52 “Moving” – Selection

A number of different type of images resulted from shooting this week. From my usual geometric to something abit more lyrical. The shot of this week is one that started to grow on me. The combination of elements seems to just work. Interestingly enough most of the shots were taken from the pedestrian bridge where I shot my film project a couple of weeks back. Still amazed how many sort of images can be made in a 30m length location when one looks.

I feel three of the images this week (i seem to always do) are pretty much interchangeable for the top spot.

The project has highlighted some key areas to shoot. I’ve been shooting the pigeons quite abit and have started to come up with a series.

Played with panning aswell. Abit cliche I know but I just couldn’t help it.

Week 08 – Update

I have been enjoying shooting over the last couple of days in shutter priority  mode (typically 1/50s) at 100 ISO. You forget how movement adds another level of interest on an otherwise average image.

In saying that I also don’t want to just rely on this sort of trickery to make an interesting image without any sort of meaning/story.

Week 06/52 “Fringe” – Selection

A vertical selection this week. I could not go pass this shot from last night. I enjoy the non interaction of the people around the squatting cone head lady. She has seemingly blended in and has been successful hiding from her friends.  Perhaps not so peripheral with the binge drinking culture Australia has but I picked it for the humour and its simultaneous strangeness.

B Sides below are a mix of images captured from the fringe festival in Perth as well as people that live in the fringes of society ie, the homeless (a street photography cliche I know)

Fringe World

The word Fringe of course. Using the available light to illuminate the woman.

The Big Issue

Particularly like the juxtaposition of the man selling the big issue, which I took as the “fringe” subject, against the Rio Tinto signage on the building and the camera surveillance sign on the wall.

Down and Out

Came across this man on my way to get some groceries. I wish the government did more. For the life of me I do not understand why cities in Australia do not have public sanitary sort of facilities beyond the toilet.

Vagabonds

A man and his long time companion. The bag almost looks like it has obtained some human qualities over the years.

The Mannequins

Something about mannequins that are just freaky.

Gold Digger

Lady luck was on my side here.

Distance Gaze

I asked this man for his portrait and to my surprise he agreed. His distance gaze, and soft eyes to me shows vulnerability.  He did not talk much, his mind was somewhere else.

Week 06 – “Fringe”

Theme this week is Fringe. To be more specific there is a fringe festival happening in Perth. I like the openness of this theme but it does make it difficult to narrow down the shots (as I found last week). I have a feeling Friday and Saturday will be the days to shoot the festival,… Continue reading Week 06 – “Fringe”
